Kuala Lumpur's specialty coffee scene has exploded over the last five years. What was once a handful of pioneer roasters has grown into a dense, competitive, genuinely exciting ecosystem — and the beans coming out of these roasters rival anything you'd find in Melbourne or Seoul.
This is our running list of every specialty roaster worth knowing in KL, updated regularly. Each one roasts in-house, sources with care, and sells retail bags you can brew at home.
Bangsar & Damansara
103 Coffee
One of KL's most consistent roasters. Strong on Ethiopians — their Yirgacheffe and Geisha Village lots are reliably excellent. Find them on Shopee or at their Bangsar outlet. What to buy: Apartment Blend for everyday espresso, Ethiopia Geisha Village when you want something special.
Ghostbird Coffee Co.
Boutique roaster with a focus on unusual processing methods — anaerobic naturals, extended fermentation lots. Their Liberica releases are some of the most interesting in Malaysia. Not always cheap, but always worth it. What to buy: Whatever their current anaerobic natural is.
TTDI & Mont Kiara
2f+ Coffee Roastery
Adventurous sourcing — they've done Ethiopia × Yunnan collaborative lots that are genuinely unlike anything else on the market. Good for people who've already explored the classics and want something weirder. What to buy: Their anniversary and limited edition releases.
Petaling Jaya & Subang
Bad Artist Coffee Co.
Excellent value and a strong commitment to Malaysian-grown Liberica. Their MyLiberica range brings local farm-to-cup provenance at accessible prices — rare for specialty Liberica. What to buy: Malaysia MyLiberica Johor for a genuine local coffee experience.
💡 Pro tip
Most of these roasters sell via Shopee or their own website. Buying direct from the roaster's site usually gets you fresher stock and supports them more directly than marketplace orders.
